Hurricane Committee shapes up for 2005
Donovan Ebanks, National Hurricane Committee, (NHC) Chairman
According to Donovan Ebanks, National Hurricane Committee, (NHC) chairman, after months of work the NHC has a new enhanced and more streamlined structure.
"Several committees have been reorganised and new committees have been added, in response to lessons learned from Hurricane Ivan," said Mr Ebanks." We feel we are now in a much better position to meet the many demands of any post-hurricane situation."
The new organizational structure groups the NHC's role and responsibilities into four operational areas: emergency response, human concerns, infrastructure, and support services. Each area will be the ultimate responsibility of an NHC deputy chairman who will assist the chairman in the administration of the NHC, as part of an executive team.
"Grouping NHC sub-committees with connected responsibilities together into these operational areas will make for easier decision making and more efficient administration," explained Mr Ebanks, adding that government was indebted to the hard work of sub-committee heads and members in working with the consultants James Lee Witt and Associates to accomplish the changes and to prepare for this season.
"I urge families, businesses and community-based organizations and individuals who haven't yet done so, to take the same critical look that we did at their own hurricane preparedness and response arrangements to see what improvements they need to make and how they can assist each other."
