    Hurricanes, or tropical cyclones, are large, powerful, and often destructive tropical weather systems with sustained winds of 74 mph or greater. Hurricanes rotate around a center, or "eye", with the strongest wind found closest to the center and generally in the right front quadrant of the storm.     Hurricanes are classified based on the Saffir-Simpson Scale which categorizes hurricanes based on the measurement of a 1-minute sustained peak surface wind.
